The working method for mixed media pieces is a two or three-step
process. If the work has a collograph base, then first a 3-d
collage of textured materials is created on board. Second it
is sealed, inked and then run through a printing press, resulting
in an embossed image on paper.
The third step is to draw into the
image, most often using pastel, or perhaps with colored pencil.
This approach is very spontaneous and intuitive as the composition
is based on “what is found” in the original textural
image. Serigraphs have also been used this way as a base for works.
The drawings may also develop as
a response to, or interpretation of musical work.
In the two-step method, a watercolor, or ink wash is created and
used as a foundation.
