The original work was built on texture since it began as a collagraph. The complex base of rich textural qualities and shapes hinted at an image, which was then pulled out. That is, I saw fragments of images and then enhanced them. The approach was intuitive; the working method was a matter of being very responsive to what was going on.
The idea that emerged was a take-of on the concern with oceans and fish, like Aquarium Piece. Here Endangered refers to endangered species, but also on a more universal scale it refers to anything that is caught or trapped. The one eye area reminded me of a seal perhaps caught in oil. As the work progressed it became more vivid with the added colors as it needed a resolution about survival also. If the content was completely negative the work would be much darker. Still there is much tension in it.
People who enjoy this work say they find all kinds of other images in it that have personal meaning to them. This is true of much of the other spontaneously created work, such as Pieces of the Puzzle.
